It’s International Women’s Day, a day to honor and celebrate the cultural, economic, social and political achievements of women over the past 100+ years. It’s a day to remind ourselves why girls are so revolutionary. Despite the great strides that women have made, endemic challenges still hinder the growth of every woman fulfilling her limitless potential. Fittingly, this year’s theme is #PressforProgress.
According to the World’s Economic Forum’s 2017 Global Gender Gap Report, data shows that the gap is widening to the point that gender parity will now take over 2 centuries to seal! That is too long of a wait. What is the Global Gender Gap Report? It measures 144 countries regarding their improvement on gender parity through four central themes: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment. Fueled by international movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp, there is a strong momentum striving for gender parity.
Women Are Revolutionary.
Echoing the priority of Impact Global Health Alliance Global, empowerment and equity are some of the values that flourished within our organization. Since the vision of our organization is healthy mothers and children around the world, we consider this to be a very important day – both for the recognition of mothers and all that they do, as well as to raise awareness about issues that continue to affect many women around the world.
It’s International Women’s Day, a day to honor and celebrate the cultural, social, economic and political achievements of women. It’s a day to remind ourselves why girls are so amazing.
The untapped potential for women and girls is gaining attention as local movements turn global. Impact Global Health Alliance supports the empowerment of women with the knowledge, tools and access within the local communities we work in. Our programs around the world has emphasized the saying: empowered women, empower women. There are so many women around the world with untapped potential. For example, we have worked to reduce child mortality from preventable diarrheal diseases in the Kibera slums of Kenya. With the efforts of our Care Groups, 210 pregnant women were reached with vital health education and support. As a result of training, community engagement, education, and support, 90% of deliveries took place at a health facility with a skilled birth attendant!
