Fall 2012 Interns

Although the semester is over, we want to highlight the work of our Fall 2012 interns and share more about them with you.  They provided a fantastic support to our programs and operations at the head office or abroad.  We’ll miss them and we look forward to their bright future!

Sarah Mohamed

Sarah has a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from UNC-Chapel Hill.  She was a participant and leader of Global Water Brigades at UNC and conducted a diversity camp in Bosnia under the Davis Projects for Peace grant.

While at Impact Global Health Alliance, Sarah provided support to the Monitoring and Evaluation system for the Guatemala Child Survival Project, quality assurance of the budget for the first year of the project, and helped summarize and edit documents for project staff.

Sarah hopes to work in a microbiology research or clinical laboratory and go to graduate school to study public health or business.  She wants to eventually work in the global health field to bring microbiology testing to undeserved areas.

In her spare time Sarah enjoys running; she ran her last half-marathon in March.  She also enjoys finding new and unique recipes, and volunteering with local youth groups.

Essee Oruma

Essee began her first semester at NC State University as a Master of International Studies student.  She is from Lima, Ohio and obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies from Miami University in Ohio.  She currently works as an interviewer for a research project at Research Triangle Institute International (RTI).

Essee has been a community organizer with Environment Ohio and Ohio Citizen Action and she has volunteered in various capacities with the American Red Cross, The Columbus Council on World Affairs and as an ESOL tutor.

As a Impact Global Health Alliance Intern, Essee worked on the Volunteer Program Manual, the Impact Global Health Alliance Global Financial Manual, and the Technical Programs Manual.  She also assisted production of our USAID Guatemala Annual Report and provided support to our Haiti and Liberia programs.

Amber Hill

Amber just graduated from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with a Master of Science in Public Health.  Previously she earned her Bachelor of Science degree from University of British Columbia.

Amber started her public health career in injury prevention at the British Columbia Injury Research and Prevention Unit in Vancouver.  After attending Johns Hopkins, Amber interned at the Department of Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.

As a Impact Global Health Alliance intern this fall, Amber worked on standardizing the vital events registration system with partner organization Impact Global Health Alliance-Guatemala.  She lived in Calhuitz for three months and worked with the local team to ensure the vital events statistics were accurate and complete.  Amber also helped train staff on focus group protocols and devised a strategy to establish community health priorities.  Amber shares that she is very grateful for the experience and the local staff is a group of dedicated, hospitable, and intelligent people.  She learned how a community health project functions in rural communities such as these.

Now Amber is working as a consultant with International Planned Parenthood Federation, Western Hemisphere Region.  She will also be studying for the MCATs and applying to medical school.

For recreation Amber loves hiking, snowboarding, scuba diving, playing the piano, travel, and other outdoor activities.
