Since December 2013, Barbara Muffoletto has been one of Impact Global Health Alliance Global’s Program Managers. Since then, she has contributed to the organization’s success and impact in significant ways. More recently, as the Co-chair of the CORE Group, she has led a team of global community health professionals to develop a set of guidelines for home-based care in COVID-19.
Besides Impact Global Health Alliance Global, the CORE Group includes partners like World Vision, Food for the Hungry, Hesperian Health Guides, Relief International, PATH, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Save the Children, Nutrition International, IMA World Health, RTI, International Rescue Committee, FHI 360 and Clinton Health Access Initiative.
This guide provides accessible language, consolidated up-to-date evidence, and recommendations to nonprofits, the Red Cross Red Crescent network, and local organizations designing programs and materials in response to COVID-19 in low and middle-income countries.
As a supplemental tool for organizations working with community health workers (CHWs), this guide can also be adapted for other purposes as it focuses on three common areas:
- How to support a person whose condition warrants home care because of non-severe symptoms and home care is recommended by local jurisdictions;
- How to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the home; and
- How to provide emotional support to family members.
Impact Global Health Alliance Global’s partners in Bolivia, Guatemala, Kenya, and Liberia will be some direct beneficiaries. The materials have also been shared with larger international NGOs, including the more than 192 International Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescents national offices, and distributed to the Ministries of Health in Kenya and Rwanda.
In the coming weeks, the guide will be translated into Spanish, French, Khmer (Cambodia), Arabic, Portuguese, and possibly Russian. The materials will also be presented to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Africa.
Health care professionals like Barbara, who championed causes like this one, are saving lives while contributing to the transformation of entire communities, one person, one family at a time. By bringing hope through health, Impact Global Health Alliance Global continues its tireless commitment toward its vision of a world free of suffering from treatable and preventable causes.
