In El Alto, located in the highlands outside of La Paz, Bolivia, our partners at Consejo de Salud Rural Andino (CSRA) are working hard to provide creative solutions to difficult health and social problems for an often forgotten population.
One of those creative solutions is a film, the first of its kind. CSRA filmed the first movie produced in El Alto, Cuandos las Flores Hablan (When Flowers Speak). This movie, inspired by eight real life testimonies, was filmed with the participation of local actors and actresses. The testimonies are stories of different cases of violence that occurred in El Alto, a location that suffers from increasing female homicide rates. The film also features an extended debate guide, which is being used to lead discussions between teachers and youth in schools.

The use of film to teach core values is not a new idea. Films have been used in classrooms around the world to help people interpret complex concepts in a medium that is easy to understand. Just think of how many times you recall watching a movie in class throughout your academic career and better understood the subject for it. CSRA is bringing this ability to visualize difficult health issues to the people of La Paz. By creating Cuandos las Flores Hablan, CSRA is further tapping into different avenues to reach project participants.
We’re proud of our partners in Bolivia and their creative strategies to address health challenges in El Alto. More women and children are alive and healthy today because of their dedication to providing vital health services to communities in need. Interested in seeing the actual film, check it out HERE
